BREAKING NEWS :: COC Radio Station Stops Airing

Posted by dakom at 07:45 AM on November 27, 2008 Comments comments (0)

The College of Communication?s official radio station DZMC-FM 98.3 temporarily stopped its operation after Dean Robert F. Soriano instructed to wait for the license from the National Telecommunications Commission.

According to Pamela Fernandez, Assistant Station Manager, Professor Clarita Valdez-Ramos, Station Manager told her last October 28 that they had to postpone the plan for airing on November 11, and cancel all scheduled activity concerning the matter.

Professor Edna Bernabe, former Program Manager, said that the application is already underway. That both said mentors will be submitting all documents to NTC. She also added that the letter of application for the permit is already in the office of President Dante Guevarra.

Prof Bernabe mentioned that Dean advised to finish the level of test broadcast. She emphasized that we will ask for a temporary airing permit status from NTC during the whole process.

However, Fernandez believed that for a community radio station working under less than 5 watts, permit is not necessarily needed while waiting for the license. She also reiterated that they are done with the test broadcast, and that that are ready for the regular programming on a 2-watt frequency.

It was in February this year when the radio station started with the call sign of DZMC 98.3. A simulation effected last June 19 with a re-launch on the 30th of September. Former station manager and adviser of BroadCircle Prof. Malaya Abadilla-Ygot resigned shortly after Prof Bernabe?s chairmanship. Weeks later, Department of Broadcast Communication Chairperson Prof Ma. Victoria Red appointed Prof. Ramos as the new station manager; while Prof. Bernabe chose Prof. Kriztine Viray as the new Program Manager.

As of this moment, there is no clear date yet for the re-airing of the said radio station. ● Arlyn Amboy & Hernan Aguacito

● Anne Dominique delos Santos

Vol. 7 No. 2:: Editorial:: The Bad Habit

Posted by dakom at 12:37 PM on August 29, 2008 Comments comments (0)
It is a habit. Students waiting patiently in long lines during enrollment just to assure a slot in the nation?s cheapest University, is never alien to us. In fact, PUPians experience this helllike scenario every after semester. With the so called ?Total University? slogan of the Guevarra administration, they came up with a way to make enrollment procedure easy and hassle free. Their solution? The developmental fee. And the result? A big flop!
Watching the irony of higher tuition fee with a worse enrollment procedure is not a nice spectacle to see. Adding another two hundred fifty bucks for more sweat, more lines and more time made the freshies unhappy, their moms unhappier and the activists unhappiest.
This is the University?s bad habit. And as the song goes, this is a hard habit to break. The habit of student oppression. Oppression hidden underneath pretty and preppy projects. Not to mention the never ending war of the students against compulsories and commercialism.
Though fresher and more controversial issues started covering up the developmental fee ballyhoo, the stink and rot of this ruckus still lingers in the campus. And this lingering longs to be stopped. Not by the students but by the stinking campus administration covering themselves with sweet and lovely perfumes.

Vol. 7 No. 2:: Opinion:: No Holds Barred:: Aktibong COC

Posted by dakom at 12:26 PM on August 29, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Gasgas man kung sasabihin, subalit walang perpektong tao.
Kapwa COCian, sama-sama tayong maging aktibong future media practitioners. ● Jan Meynard Nualla

Vol. 7 No. 2:: News:: BOO promises a better COC canteen

Posted by dakom at 12:22 PM on August 29, 2008 Comments comments (0)
The PUP - Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) establishment ?Kubo? canteen sited on COC recently closed down from its operations.
Business Operations Office (BOO) Director Randolph Alcantara says that the former subsidiary businessman who managed the said canteen violated its terms on pending rental fee
payments and basically, its fire hazard structure.
The BOO said it had been eyeing on its structure since, but they never had time to resolve it not until now, because of the various work loads the BOO has.
?Another businessman with assurance that conforms to the (structure?s) standard? more presentable?, assured Alcantara regarding the canteen renovation in an interview with The Communicator.
In the "order and provision of the BOO" itself, they relayed the ??notice of award?? to another businessman with the assurance that conforms to the structure?s standard and which
is more presentable.
The canteen will also serve as a student learning center.
?COC should plan for a concrete canteen structure along with it is a student learning center,? Dr. Robert Soriano quoted his proposal during the meeting presided by the VP?s, Directors, and Deans, prior to this development. ●  Patrick Jucutan

Vol. 7 No. 2:: News:: COC at Seven: A Distinct Celebration for Environment

Posted by dakom at 12:12 PM on August 29, 2008 Comments comments (0)
COC Community displayed a prowess of unity as they unfolded a new chapter in its own history by turning the institution into a paradigm of learning for years as they celebrated their 7th Founding Anniversary with this year?s theme: ?Institutionalizing a Total Communication Culture and Environment?.
The three-day celebration though very short, were infused with the combined brains and efforts by the COC Faculty Club, COC Alumni Association, different school organizations, and was actively participated by the COC students.

Day One: Advocating Environment Protection
As to invoke God?s presence as well as to thank the Almighty for the blessings He gave to the College, a Thanksgiving mass was held at the Bulwagang Balagtas in the morning. An academic convocation with the presence of GMA Network Incorporated CEO and President, Atty. Felipe Gozon followed the event.
The first day of the celebration opened with a creative faculty of minds and an artistic prowess of the COC freshmen as they displayed the environment-inspired human exhibit through a motorcade parade from the NALLRC grounds reaching the COC Grounds. The jungle-like motorcades were the center of the attention, supported by the sophomore, junior and senior students clad in their assigned shirts; red for Broadcast Communication students, green for Journalism students and blue for Communication Research students. Journalism Freshmen prevailed over the other motorcades as they wereadjudged as the best float.
To complete the day in advocating protection for the environment, Mr. and Ms. COC 2008 Coronation Night Pageant gazed through the night. The butterfly-inspired theme of the pageant made it not just colorful but as well as enticing to the eyes
of the audience.
In the same league with the other contests, certain candidates stood out over the rest. The Best in Sports Wear and the Ms. People?s Choice was bagged by the Ms. COC 1st Runner Up Raiza Aricayos of BJ 3-1. Mr. and Ms. Talent were given to Mikael Anjo Canlas of BBRC 3-1 and Monaliza Valconcha of BBRC 4-2. Gerard Garcia of BJ 3-1 bagged the Best in Formal Wear and Mr. People?s Choice. Philip Marqueta of BJ 3-1N and Madeline Jean Garcia of BCR 2-1 emerged as this year?s Mr. and Ms. COC.

Day Two: A Seminar for Learning and a Night of Grandeur
Distinctively different from the previous college week celebrations, faculty members headed by this year?s chair of the 7th COC Founding Anniversary, Prof. Anna Ruby Gapasin, initiated a Lecture Series about Advocacy Communication Campaign Training and Lay Forum on Renal Disease, Organizational Communication, and Sports Journalism. The said lectures were participated by Public Information, Research and Journalism Students held at the Claro M. Recto Hall.
The most awaited event of the COC Founding Anniversary marked the night as it launched the Sikat Awards 2008. Clad in semi-formal attire, Broadcast Communication students as well as the Journalism students for the first time, graced the Bulwagang Balagtas.
Some of the awards given include ?Scrabble? by BBRC 3-2 for Best COC Plug, while BBRC 4-3?s ?To Where You Are? bagged the Best Clay Animation. For Music Video Festival 2007, BBRC 3-1 won the Best Music Video followed by BBRC 3-3 and BBRC 3-1N. Freshmen?s Quisumbing-Escandor Music Video Awards or Music Video Festival 2008 made noise as BBRC 2-1 bagged the Best Music Video as BBRC 2-3 and 2-2 won as the 2nd and 3rd respectively.
For the Drama Festival 2007, BBrC 4-1N?s Abyssus got Best Play, Best Director, Best Poster, and Best Set Design. BBrC 4-1?s Onakuleom got Second Best Play and Best Technical Design & Execution and BBrC 4-5?s La Abakada Filipina got Third Best Play. BBrC 4-1N and 4-1D shared the Best Story award. All acting awards were taken by BBrC 4-1N except for the Best Actress award taken by BBrC 4-4?s Nauna a Kaluma and Best Supporting Actress award which was grabbed by BBrC 4-3?s Xiangvidha.
As for the Drama Fest 2008, BBRC 3-4?s Luminaria won the Over-all Best Play Production aside from other awards they reaped like Best in Set Design, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best Actress. BBRC 3-2?s Mini Mayni Mo bagged the 3rd Best Play and Best in Story Concept while BBrC 3-3?s Dimlan got 2nd Best Play, Best Poster, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor.

Day Three: COC Idol Season 3?s Majestic Night
And to complete the COC Founding Anniversary Celebration, COC Ensemble?s singing contest launched the third season of COC Idol. Top 12 finalists called as the Majestic 12 competed for this year?s title.
Among the 12 aspiring finalists of the said competition, Edgar Dianne Castro of BBRC 1-4 emerged as the new COC Idol. The event became a huge success as the whole COC Community enjoyed this memorable celebration and proving the real worth of the students as talented media practitioners. ● Anne Dominique delos Santos at Michael Cabial
